This isn't a joke, or anything like that, it's simply a demonstration of what I think pokemon battles could be like if the creators of the games weren't so stuck on turnbase battles.

I think that with the technology that we have today, video games could, and should, be much more inventive. Game creators are way too stuck on old concepts, one being turnbase battles.

So I've been working on this for the past few days nonstop. Finally done. Ish. The preloader doesn't work, for some reason it loads last, so your gonna have to wait for it.
edit: I would have made this a demo like a game that you could play, but I don't know enough about actionscript, hence the movie.

Things you should notice:
-Bulbasaur was able to dodge the second tackle because it was used twice in a row, and the dodge button was hit.
-Rattata attacked twice in a row in the middle because it's second attack was a quick attack.
-Even though bulbasaur was warned about the quick attack, it couldn't dodge it because it always hits.
-Even though quick attack usually does a little more than tackle, it did the same ammount as the first tackle after bulbasaur used growl.
-Leech seed happens by itself, it happened the second time right before the quick attack.

Things I would like, but you can't see:
-For moves like solar beam the "..." meter would charge up
-For double battles, there would probably be a switch pokemon button somewhere
-Sometimes untrained pokemon would make mistakes, or take a while to respond.
-Pokemon that wont listen will literally just do their own thing, whenever they want.
-All pokemon would need more sprites, or at least one for attacking, one for dodging.
-The dodge button can be used to warn your pokemon, to increase the chance of evading an attack.
-Pokemon also have a better chance of dodging an attack if it is used consecutivly.
-Different attacks have differnent timings, for example quick attack takes longer to recover than tackle
-The battle never pauses, if you wait too long, your opponent will keep attacking. Even if your getting something from your bag, or thinking aobut switching pokemon.
-If you hit the pokeball button, it would bring you to a screen like the first one, where you can send out different pokemon.
It'd be cool if you could customize how the player talks. "Go {P}!"

Things I custom made:
-The bars
-The text that says "-HP" and stuff
-The dodge icon
-edited the small backpack sprite to be huge
-my name at the end obviously

So there it is. Hope you like it, leave your comments.
And now I should be working on my pokemon comic, if you're lucky I'll finish it soon.

If you would like to attempt a demo of this game, here's the sprite sheet I used: [link]

This is awesome, but looks pretty confusing. I'm sure people would get the hang of it after a while though.

This should be made with like, all the other Pokemon as some "battle simulator" test type thing. Where stat groups could be edited and items unlim for 'simulating' battles. I think battles like this would ad a -lot- more to the games immersion then turns due to having to focus and pay attention along with the strategy element in real time having to think on the fly' I would suggest the 'end battle' text stay open until like "press a" type deal but otherwise this sounds amazing with a lot of awesome attached to it. Cause as much as I love playing pokemon, some real time speed ups would be a lot more fun.

I see one major flaw about the non stop attacking. We have lives so what happens when a moody mother appears and starts yelling at you. Not everyone has the common sense to close a ds so you would pretty much die.
RaiKobra Featured By Owner Mar 14, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
In that case, it would most likely be made so you can pause during a battle

Hm I suppose

What about every game that's NOT turnbase, which is most of them. We seem to get along fine.

Not bad, its also about reaction timing now. But say you spammed one button? How could you heal?
I mean, there are some flaws with the system you have. Maybe if we could use the microphone to give voice commands? That would be EPIC
Mandymom Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2013
i think there should be a option for non-turn based battles in X & Y. It could sell more.. i hope..

It would make it harder to have VG tournaments as being distracted for a few seconds could lose you the game... but i still think its a great idea just maybe not suitable for the mainstream games... unless you had it as a kind of mini game (like in the safari zone or similar to the pokeathlon)
skeddles Featured By Owner May 16, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
In almost every genre EXCEPT this, being distracted for a few seconds will cause you to lose the game. And yeah I wouldn't say make it the mainstream game either.

^This is the only part I don't like. I'm the person who plays Pokemon while watching TV or texting and is easily distracted from the game, so that aspect would really hurt me. :XD:
skeddles Featured By Owner Apr 20, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well this would be a different type of game. You wouldn't play a first person shooter while watching tv.
Queen-of-Flowers Featured By Owner Apr 20, 2013  Student General Artist
that is true. I was thinking of my older games when I said that. I guess with the DS all you have to do is close it and it pauses the game. :)

I would love for there to be an option in game to either use ATB (active time battle) or TBA (turn based attack) that way people will be able to choose which they want to play.

I think trying out an ATB pokemon game would be a nice change of pace myself. I've also wanted to be able to tell my pokemon to dodge, like they can in the anime.
It would almost be like having a "hard" mode for players who are looking for more of a challenge then TBA's provide.

As for RPG's being "generally TBA"...maybe the ones you (BloodyRoyalty) play, but I play primarily RPG's and over half of them are ATB or have the option for ATB, and my collection includes 300+ games, over several systems.

I do find it funny though with all the rage that happens every time a pokemon game changes a bit. This is a game where trainers change and evolve their pokemon, yet the players fear the game changing and evolving.
AkaneKaoru Featured By Owner Mar 4, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I find this a great idea but people who play Pokemon like to keep it, well, like Pokemon.
SpicyCurry2 Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2013
I'm not trying to be mean, but I bet that GameFreak won't care as long as it sells. But I like the animation- or whatever the right term for this is.
skeddles Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I agree with you 100%
BomberLory Featured By Owner Feb 20, 2013
Like, i had trouble comprehending it.
But still, great idea, i've often thought about what we could do if we could command pokemon to dodge. And i like the layout, if it is a little confusing. but it's definitely more realistic.
FAlLURE Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2013  Hobbyist
Pokemon is an RPG. It should stay an RPG. Personally, I think this is an awful idea and if it ever got implemented, Pokemon would lose most of its fans.
skeddles Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
This has nothing that would make it not a role playing game =]
FAlLURE Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2013  Hobbyist
Actually, it does. An RPG is generally turn based. And this isn't, obviously.
skeddles Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
If we only played games because they fit the norm, it would be a very boring world. In fact it kinda is. Changing things up never hurt anybody. And there are still plenty of non turn based RPGs
FAlLURE Featured By Owner Feb 23, 2013  Hobbyist
But Pokemon (the mainstream games) follow a good formula. And most people play Pokemon because they like the formula. There are spinoffs if you want a change, anyway.

List any non turned based RPG's.
Aeonwyn Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2013
Kingdom Hearts, Elder Scrolls Games (All of them), Final Fantasy XIII (a welcome change of pace), Star Ocean, World of Warcraft (technically an RPG and all MMOs are like this) ... I could go on, but you seem like the closed minded type who fears change and doesn't like to be proved wrong. So, I'll leave you with this. Pokemon needs to change. Its time. Turn based games were not made that way because they were somehow superior gaming types but because technology limited their creators from doing much else. I, personally, would like to see even more changes take place in pokemon games. If you want the same repetitive formula over and over again, just play the old games for the rest of your life.
FAlLURE Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2013  Hobbyist
Close-minded? Nah. Why would you make that assumption? Because I think Pokemon is perfect the way it is, or at least the mainstream games?

Pokemon does not need change, didn't you get the memo? Whenever it launches, it always sells by the millions. People really like the repetitive formula apparently. Can't blame them, it's flawless. It's what made it successful *gasp*

If you want a change of pace, play the spinoffs. Ranger was neat and so was Mystery Dungeon and Rumble.

But, thankfully, you'll be the few minority who will wish and dream for a change in the mainstream games. Thank God you aren't in a position of power, you'll kill the franchise.

And you really can't compare Pokemon to other games. It does its own thing. Comparing it to others would be disrespectful.
pure-randomness Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2013  Student General Artist
You ASKED them to name other games, so please don't turn around and tell him not to after requesting he does so. And who know maybe your the minority of not wanting it to change? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, the option of having ATB instead of TBA would make it sell MORE, just a thought. We have the technology so why not make that an option?

I disagree. The idea of turn based games is to introduce strategy. Pokemon would be a very different game without this aspect and everything they have worked for up to know would almost a waste without it.
Aeonwyn Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2013
Strategy is even more important when real time is added to the formula. It takes far more strategy and quick thinking to win a match in real time than one that lets you wait forever.
AwsomeCaleb1 Featured By Owner Mar 4, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I disagree. It would be far too chaotic with everything happening at once. It doesn't introduce strategy it introduces quick thinking. Have you ever seen people battle online. The strategy is insane and it would be lost with real time.

I TOTALLY agree with you. Pokemon should be more up-to-date with every other game. It pretty much was with everyone when black and white turned into color, and even got some 3D action in there more recently. (I even think they could have tried to put pokemon movements into Platinum instead of waiting around for Black and White if they wanted too)

But I think that because Pokemon is meant for CHILDREN, they've never tried doing that. They probably think that the Pokemon game would be too hard, too fast, and bad reviews and no profit. Now that Pokemon has been around for so long (like the '90), they have to watch very closely to the public's overall opinion and make every possible action to not lose profits or fans.
LuminaBalderson Featured By Owner Dec 17, 2012
I agree with your point entirely.
Sure, it would be epic, but it would make it too hard for children.

By the way, hasn't anyone noticed how dark some of the Pokedex entries are?
