This isn't a joke, or anything like that, it's simply a demonstration of what I think pokemon battles could be like if the creators of the games weren't so stuck on turnbase battles.
I think that with the technology that we have today, video games could, and should, be much more inventive. Game creators are way too stuck on old concepts, one being turnbase battles.
So I've been working on this for the past few days nonstop. Finally done. Ish. The preloader doesn't work, for some reason it loads last, so your gonna have to wait for it. edit: I would have made this a demo like a game that you could play, but I don't know enough about actionscript, hence the movie.
Things you should notice: -Bulbasaur was able to dodge the second tackle because it was used twice in a row, and the dodge button was hit. -Rattata attacked twice in a row in the middle because it's second attack was a quick attack. -Even though bulbasaur was warned about the quick attack, it couldn't dodge it because it always hits. -Even though quick attack usually does a little more than tackle, it did the same ammount as the first tackle after bulbasaur used growl. -Leech seed happens by itself, it happened the second time right before the quick attack.
Things I would like, but you can't see: -For moves like solar beam the "..." meter would charge up -For double battles, there would probably be a switch pokemon button somewhere -Sometimes untrained pokemon would make mistakes, or take a while to respond. -Pokemon that wont listen will literally just do their own thing, whenever they want. -All pokemon would need more sprites, or at least one for attacking, one for dodging. -The dodge button can be used to warn your pokemon, to increase the chance of evading an attack. -Pokemon also have a better chance of dodging an attack if it is used consecutivly. -Different attacks have differnent timings, for example quick attack takes longer to recover than tackle -The battle never pauses, if you wait too long, your opponent will keep attacking. Even if your getting something from your bag, or thinking aobut switching pokemon. -If you hit the pokeball button, it would bring you to a screen like the first one, where you can send out different pokemon. It'd be cool if you could customize how the player talks. "Go {P}!"
Things I custom made: -The bars -The text that says "-HP" and stuff -The dodge icon -edited the small backpack sprite to be huge -my name at the end obviously
============== So there it is. Hope you like it, leave your comments. And now I should be working on my pokemon comic, if you're lucky I'll finish it soon.
EDIT If you would like to attempt a demo of this game, here's the sprite sheet I used: [link]
It would make it harder to have VG tournaments as being distracted for a few seconds could lose you the game... but i still think its a great idea just maybe not suitable for the mainstream games... unless you had it as a kind of mini game (like in the safari zone or similar to the pokeathlon)
In almost every genre EXCEPT this, being distracted for a few seconds will cause you to lose the game. And yeah I wouldn't say make it the mainstream game either.
-The battle never pauses, if you wait too long, your opponent will keep attacking. Even if you're getting something from your bag or thinking aobut switching pokemon. ^This is the only part I don't like. I'm the person who plays Pokemon while watching TV or texting and is easily distracted from the game, so that aspect would really hurt me.
I would love for there to be an option in game to either use ATB (active time battle) or TBA (turn based attack) that way people will be able to choose which they want to play.
I think trying out an ATB pokemon game would be a nice change of pace myself. I've also wanted to be able to tell my pokemon to dodge, like they can in the anime. It would almost be like having a "hard" mode for players who are looking for more of a challenge then TBA's provide.
As for RPG's being "generally TBA"...maybe the ones you (BloodyRoyalty) play, but I play primarily RPG's and over half of them are ATB or have the option for ATB, and my collection includes 300+ games, over several systems.
I do find it funny though with all the rage that happens every time a pokemon game changes a bit. This is a game where trainers change and evolve their pokemon, yet the players fear the game changing and evolving.
